Muscle spasms can be a painful and annoying occurrence in an individual’s life. Muscle spasms are marked by sudden contraction of a muscle, causing sharp or shooting pain. They typically do not last long, but their frequency varies amongst sufferers. Those who suffer with chronic ailments such as multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and cerebral palsy have especially painful and frequent spasms. Most common muscle spasms can be relieved by keeping the body well hydrated and electrolyte levels balanced, but for those who suffer from frequent and debilitating spasms, the typical treatments include botox injections to paralyze the affected muscles, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and pain relievers.
Of all the treatments available for muscle spasms, those most prescribed have severe, dangerous, and long-lasting side effects. Botox, for example, is derived from the same bacteria that causes botulism, a strain of bacteria that causes a fatal type of food poisoning. A misplaced botox injection can be fatal. Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) can lead to kidney failure, liver failure, ulcers, dizziness, vomiting, and nausea. Muscle relaxants can lead to heart failure and paralysis. Pain medications, such as hydrocodone, are highly addictive drugs derived from opium, which is also from where heroin is derived. Opiates can actually make the individual’s pain worse after awhile requiring higher and higher doses until the sufferer is hopelessly addicted to the substance. Aside from these horrific side effects, each one of these pharamceuticals also carries with it the danger of fatal toxicity.
What many people may not know is marijuana is a safer and more effective treatment than any of those typically prescribed treatments named above. Marijuana has been shown to eliminate muscle spasms with very few side effects and no risk of fatal toxicity. The potential side effects of marijuana are very mild and many find them much more manageable than those of traditional pharmaceutical treatments. Of those side effects, the most common are feelings of uneasiness, drowsiness, and giddiness. Aside from these mild side effects, the most promising characteristic of marijuana use to treat chronic illness is that marijuana toxicity, or overdose, is not possible. This means long-term use for those who have chronic ailments cannot and will not lead to toxic levels and cause death.
While some may argue about the dangerous pulmonary effects of marijuana use, these effects are caused by the combustion of the substance during the traditional form of consumption by smoking. The use of a vaporizer completely eliminates this problem by allowing the active ingredient to be extracted and infused into water vapor for the patient to inhale, thus eliminating the production of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other carcinogens produced by combustion.
While medical marijuana is still in its infancy, the archaic and inaccurate stigma attached to its use is quickly slipping away as more and more people are enlightened as to the benefits of using it to treat various ailments traditionally treated by toxic and dangerous chemicals. Marijuana is much safer and much more effective than most of these pharmaceuticals on the market for a plethora of different illnesses and, as word gets out, is slowly gaining recognition as the miracle drug it truly is.
In medicine a spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle, a group of muscles, or a hollow organ such as a heart, or a similarly sudden contraction of an orifice. It most commonly refers to a muscle cramp which is often accompanied by a sudden burst of pain, but is usually harmless and ceases after a few minutes. There is a variety of other causes of involuntary muscle contractions, which may be more serious, depending on the cause.
The word “spasm” may also refer to a temporary burst of energy, activity, emotion, Eustress, stress, or anxiety unrelated to, or as a consequence of, involuntary muscle activity.
